Ucumarí Organic – Cauca, Colombia
Between the western and central mountain ranges of Colombia, the coffee from Cajibío, Cauca captures the spirit of resilience and regeneration. Produced by smallholder farmers of the Federación Campesina del Cauca (FCC), this coffee represents more than exceptional flavor and tells the story of a community rebuilding peace and prosperity through sustainable farming.
In the Puenza Valley, volcanic Andisoles soils rich in organic matter nurture vibrant biodiversity. Every farm is shade-grown and diversified, protecting soil health, conserving native seeds, and ensuring the coexistence of coffee with other crops. Producers cultivate an average of 1.2 hectares each, tending to varieties like Castillo, Typica, Colombia, and Caturra, which are washed and dried in parabolic dryers on raised beds.
FCC has been active for over 53 years, evolving from a peasant movement into a federation dedicated to dignity, peacebuilding, and sustainability. In recent years, the group has transitioned away from pesticides, creating a bio-factory where members now produce their own organic inputs, supporting regenerative agriculture for coffee and other crops across the region.
At 1650–1800 MASL, the temperate climate (18–25°C) and bimodal rainfall pattern produce a cup that is both clean and complex, reflecting the terroir’s volcanic richness and the hands of those who cultivate it. The result is Ucumarí Organic, a coffee rooted in purpose, grown under shade, and cultivated with hope for the next generation.
